Auckland Council Food Safety Bylaw
1 July 2013
Auckland Council has adopted a food safety bylaw to increase the safety of food sold to the public. This will minimise the potential risks of food bought from food premises, food hawkers, food stalls and mobile food shops.
From 1 July 2013, the new bylaw replaces the seven different bylaws from the former councils that deal with food safety. It will make sure that all food businesses in Auckland follow the same region-wide standards for food safety, including grading and training. The bylaw covers:
· the timely closure of unhygienic or unsafe food premises
· minimum standards for staff training in basic food hygiene
· grading of food premises (A, B, D, E)
· standards for preparing, handling and labelling food sold to private premises (bun-running)
· operating food stalls and mobile food shops.
The bylaw came into force on 1 July 2013. Some provisions relating to training requirements will be phased in from 1 July 2013 until 1 June 2014. This will allow time for further implementation planning and for key stakeholders to get ready for the new bylaw. For more information click here.
